Our roots can be traced back to the late 1940’s when L. Bult Sr. purchased his first dump truck to deliver coal to residential homes throughout South Chicago. The company, because of its location, soon expanded into a seven day a week transportation service provider to the steel mills.

In 1972 Illini State Trucking Co. was formed and over the years we’ve opened locations in Hammond, IN, Cincinnati, OH, Lackawanna, NY, and Atlanta, GA, and have grown into hauling Alloys, Glass, Aggregate, Lime, Scrap Metal, Carbons, Corn Sweeteners, Sucrose, Oils, Flour, Dextrose, Frac Sand, Lime, Flyash, Cement and Plastic Resin.

Because of our growth, in 2011 we moved our corporate office from Gary, IN to Hammond, IN with a 12,000 square-foot trailer fabrication and maintenance shop. Now under the helm of the third generation, IST Logistics continues to be a growing business operated by a team of veteran professionals.

7.Thomas Trucking, Inc

Thomas Trucking began in the basement of Cal and Christine Thomas’ home in 1972, with a lease to Casket Distributors, hauling “underground furniture”. Within 3 years, Cal and Christine had purchased 7 tractors and had expanded to haul dry and refrigerated freight.

In 1984, Thomas acquired our own Authority and moved to the present location on Seymour Avenue in Cincinnati, Ohio. Cal made sure the trucks were in top shape by working on them at night, along with mechanic Carl Allen, after he worked a full day at P&G. Christine kept the operations going during the day, performing dispatch and all other office functions.

In 1987, son Mark began working in the garage and drove for the company for two years, before he came “inside” to work dispatch. In 1989, daughter Kathy began to assume more responsibility for the administrative side of the business. By this time, Thomas had about 30 company trucks and 50 reefer trailers, plus 40 owner operators. It also built a 3 bay garage for the on-site repair and maintenance of the tractors & trailers.

By 2000, Thomas Trucking was running over 100 trucks and had about 35 company and 70 owner operators. It also purchased an additional 7 acres to expand parking and office space to a total of 12 acres. Cal and Christine retired from the business in 2009. But still maintain an active presence in the business today: Mark along with mechanic Mitch Davis wheels and deals on everything, including light bulbs, from their suppliers. We buy in bulk and keeps supplies on hand to avoid buying on the road, where the prices are often double. Christine and Kathy always have kept an eye on the finances.
